Numerical analysis of a pollutant dispersion in subsurface soil
نویسندگان
چکیده
A hydraulic scale model was used in a laboratory experiment for the purpose of understanding the characteristics of a pollutant dispersion in subsurface soil. The experimental site was an area near a radioactive waste repository in the Republic of Korea. The hydraulic scale model was designed and manufactured in geometric similarity to the actual site. The tracer 99mTc which has a short half-life was injected instantaneously into the soil. Numerical simulations were performed to compare the measured radioisotope data and to investigate the overall dispersion patterns. The calculated concentrations are in good agreement with a time series of the measured concentrations at the midpoint of the detection lines. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluation of oil pollution dispersion in an unsaturated sandy soil environment
The current study assesses critical condition of oil dispassion, considering the unsaturated soil condition dispersity behavior for oil dispersion. The numerical model is used as a finite element method to model the oil spill pollution with two different saturated and unsaturated soil conditions chosen and their pollution dispersion results compared. Extracted results from numerical model show ...

متن کاملAssessing the Impact on Groundwater of Solute Transport in Contaminated Soils Using Numerical and Analytical Models
Expansion of human activities causes dispersion of pollutants in the subsurface environment. The fate and movement of dissolved substances in soils and groundwater has generated considerable interest out of concern for the quality of the subsurface environment. Many analytical solutions for partial differential equations exist in soil science. Numerical solutions are more general, and often mor...
متن کاملSequential Implicit Numerical Scheme for Pollutant and Heat Transport in a Plane-Poiseuille Flow
A sequential implicit numerical scheme is proposed for a system of partial differential equations defining the transport of heat and mass in the channel flow of a variable-viscosity fluid. By adopting the backward difference scheme for time derivative and the central difference scheme for the spatial derivatives, an implicit finite difference scheme is formulated. The variable-coefficient diffu...
متن کاملAssessment of Subsurface Explosion caused by Tunnel Construction in Urban Areas
Nowadays, tunneling in urban areas is a common activity for a variety of transportations such as subways, water supply, lifelines andsewers that may require blast operations. The characteristics of stress waves of the blast are quite different from earthquake waves. The blast waves are usually of high frequency content, short duration, equality of amplitudes in horizontal and vertical direction...
